Phase II - Stream Restoration Design Project Complete!

Phase II of the Kingstowne Stream Restoration Project is complete.  The project restored a badly eroded stream that runs from the edge of the Dumbarton neighborhood through the Carlisle neighborhood.  This restoration work built on the Kingstowne Phase I project that was completed in early 2000 just upstream of the Phase II project location.

Phase I entailed restoration of a severely degraded and unsightly stream located just below Castlewellan Drive.  The stream had been considered one of the counties' most degraded streams and Northern Virginia Soil and Water Conservation District (NVSWCD) secured a $100,000 state grant to restore the stream using natural stream channel design.  Phase I is now a stable restored stream with gentle meanders, aquatic life and a well-vegetated buffer.  It is an attractive amenity for the community.

Phase II began at the downstream end of Phase I and continued to the Greendale Golf Course.  In 2005, The Nature Conservancy (TNC) secured funding for the project from the Virginia Aquatic Resources Trust Fund, a source of relief funds that offset impacts to streams. Fairfax County also contributed $200,000 to the project.  The estimated cost of the project was $1 million and did not include any funding on the part of KROC.

A guided tour of the completed project will be held in the spring.  More information will follow.
